Suzanne Jones passed away on September 17, 2024 after a fall at her home. Suzanne was a Boulder bridge legend. For years she was the owner of both the Wednesday Club and the Friday Afternoon Club, providing a fantastic playing experience for Boulder players as well as many from up and down the Front Range. She was also one of the best players in the area and in the very small group of Unit 359 members who achieved Platinum Life Master (10,000+ points).
She was the daughter of an oil engineer, spending her early years in Saudi Arabia, Sumatra and Texas before enrolling as a freshman at CU Boulder. She finished with a master’s in library science and a PHD in English literature.
She played bridge growing up, and while working at Rocky Flats in the early 1960's begin playing at a game run by Ross Robins when a co-worker encouraged her to try duplicate – the rest is history. She was a member of the Boulder unit for more than 60 years. She frequently traveled to bridge tournaments over the years, and in retirement especially enjoyed travel to the UK. But it was a mistake to ask her to do any ground navigation!
In addition to bridge, sports were an important aspect of her life. She enjoyed skiing, golf, horseback riding, camping, hiking, rock/mountain climbing and piloting gliders. She knew the effect any cloud formation had on flying conditions. Suzanne was survived by her Burmese kitty Jackson, her constant companion over the last 15 years.
Back when the Unit published a newsletter Sally Ann Rhea interviewed Suzanne, see the attached pdf for the interview.
